Genre Generator
After experimenting with a couple genre generators online, many of them give certain examples of patterns to inform their audience that, their conventions are apart of a certain genre. By doing this, they both entertain and inform people about that topic and why its in that genre. These generators use several different types of genres to do this.
When searching the web one of the examples I found was a memes generator. This generator took hundreds and hundreds of memes and uploaded them to their site. The main purpose is to make people laugh (obviously), but the jokes are only funny to people because they are relevant to the time and people can relate to them. For instance, there are memes with popular artist of today like drake and his music video, which will probably not be relevant 50 years from now. There is memes on this website that are religious as well, like the “Jesus says” memes. Today we are allowed to joke around with that but maybe would not have in the past. See the databases go off of what is trending on social media, so what people are liking, what people are posting, they really try to see what is making people laugh. Their target audience is usually preteen to adult, depending on what they put on that picture different ages will find different pictures funny. That’s why there is so many pictures on the website, their target audience is huge.
Another genre generator that I found involved plots and writing. This one gave options for writing opening lines, giving ideas for twists in writing, helps people figure out how to write short stories, and many other things. This database is based off of the parts of stories and essays that students have the most difficulties with. So, the generator has the writer put in multiple parts of information that they already know about the piece, and it gives them several different examples they could use. So whether that be a twist, or an opening line, or even how to keep the story going, it helps out with that. This helps students keep going through writer's block, the databases try to see where students get stuck at and give them advice on options that could help them keep going.
Although that same website, is mostly for stories and writing, if you scroll down there is more generators for entertainment. There is an option to make lyrics for various music genres or music in the style of a certain artist. For example, rap music. You put in several a bunch of information, about what you want about that song. Then out pops the song! So for rap you put in whatever you want about your rap to be about, and then WALLAH! Out pops a rap! Usually it contains,”ayos” and “bros” in the content and that's what makes it a rap genre. When you put in a country genre it will include songs about growing up and where they are from, it is also usually a love song. So they write it about a boy or a girl. All these databases are based on what is heard now on the radio. They purposely put artist style of music on their websites because certain things an artist says are so distinct to their music. Artist’s usually say something so that their audiences or fans know its them, therefore that is what the databases go off of.
So most of these genre generators databases are based off of what most people think of when that topic comes up. Sometimes the databases use stereotypical names or instances that, that topic or thing is known for so that's why it is placed in that genre. The good things about genres is that they are seen all over and can not be tied to to just one category of genre, the could be in multiple genres.
